Grading is an essential step in virtually all sitework – it involves cutting (removing soil) or filling (adding soil) to achieve the desired ground slope. For residential projects, grading ensures foundations sit on level ground, yards have gentle slopes for usability, and water drains correctly. We perform rough grading to set the overall shape of the site (such as sloping land away from a house to direct runoff) and finish grading to smooth and prepare lawn areas or gravel bases. Proper grading is critical for erosion control and water management: land that is too flat can lead to standing water, while land with uncontrolled slopes can cause runoff to erode soil or flood structures. By using laser levels and engineering plans, we grade with accuracy, creating a stable terrain that supports your landscape and construction goals​. In the Hudson Valley’s mixed soils, we also implement soil compaction or import select fill where needed to prevent future settling. After grading, we can apply topsoil and seed to establish vegetation, further stabilizing the site against erosion.
